Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery

Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery

Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery (BCDR) are critical components of an organization’s risk management and resilience strategy. Together, they ensure that business operations can continue—or quickly resume—in the face of disruptions such as cyberattacks, natural disasters, system failures, or human error.

Business Continuity (BC)

Business continuity focuses on maintaining essential business functions during and after a disruption. It involves planning, policies, and procedures that help an organization operate with minimal downtime. Key elements include:

  • Business Impact Analysis (BIA): Identifies critical operations and assesses the potential impact of disruptions.

  • Continuity Planning: Develops strategies to keep operations running, such as remote work capabilities, manual workarounds, or alternate supply chains.

  • Training & Drills: Ensures staff know how to respond during emergencies.

  • Communication Plans: Maintains clear lines of communication with employees, customers, and partners during incidents.

Disaster Recovery (DR)

Disaster recovery is a subset of business continuity, focusing specifically on the recovery of IT systems, data, and infrastructure after a disaster. It involves:

  • Data Backup: Regular backups of files, databases, and applications.

  • Recovery Time Objective (RTO): The maximum acceptable time to restore systems after a failure.

  • Recovery Point Objective (RPO): The maximum acceptable amount of data loss measured in time (e.g., 4 hours of data).

  • Failover Systems: Redundant systems, cloud backups, or hot sites that can be activated quickly.

  • Testing & Validation: Routine drills to ensure recovery processes work as expected.
